Roy Buchanon - High Quality Video of a High Quality Guitarist

Roy Buchanon may just be the most respected blues guitar player that nobody ever listens to. His life and death are so swamped in controversy that it is easy to forget just how incredible a player he really was.

This half hour segment showcases several outstanding songs during a performance on Austin City Limits and it is one of the few high quality video recordings of Roy in what many consider to be his prime. If you don't know Roy Buchanon you are in for a treat. His style incorporates everything from 1950's style claw-picking Americana ala Chet Atkins and Les Paul to the heavy Brit-Blues rockers like Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck to the folksy fret-wizardry of players like Richard Thompson. He was a superb technical guitarist with a very soulful style. IMO he was one of the greatest note benders ever to pick up a guitar - second only to Hendrix in that particular skill.

Check him out. There are half a dozen songs here including his classic interpretation of the Patsy Cline song "Sweet Dreams":

- Dawes - "time Spent In Los Angeles" - Modern Band With A Vintage Sound
I am late to the party on these guys (especially since they are local to my area) but a guy just turned me on to DAWES and I wanted to let my readers know about them.  They have a great sound, excellent vocal harmonies, quality lyrics, and a general...

- Earning My "badge"
Working today on some of Eric Clapton's music. I was only a casual Clapton fan up to about six months ago, when I bought the Complete Clapton set. I've been working out of the excellent transcriptions in the accompanying book Complete Clapton...

- Deconstructing Luther Perkins
Learning some Luther Perkins licks today for a gig. Luther was Johnny Cash's guitarist from 1955 to Luther's death in 1968. He's a good example of a musician who noticeably develops and advances over the course of his career. One Johnny Counterfit...

- "while My Guitar Gently Weeps" - Unpacking A Classic Guitar Solo
If there is a piece of music that captivated me this week, it was Eric Clapton's solo in the Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." I've been working on it again, and have found it difficult to master in its simplicity because of its unusual...

- Interview: Kevin Breit.
Kevin Breit is an upsetting guitar player.  He upsets traditional notions of what is possible on the guitar.  He upsets the received wisdom of how the guitar should be played.  And he just plain upsets other guitar players, who after witnessing...
