DAWES - "Time Spent in Los Angeles" - Modern band with a Vintage Sound
I am late to the party on these guys (especially since they are local to my area) but a guy just turned me on to DAWES and I wanted to let my readers know about them.
They have a great sound, excellent vocal harmonies, quality lyrics, and a general style reminiscent of early Neil Young, Jackson Browne, The Eagles, and The Band with a little Black Keys and Rolling Stones circa Exile on Main Street thrown in. Singer-guitarist Taylor Goldsmith delivers some tasty licks on his Telecasters. I don't know if he is playing a vintage or Custom Shop Tele in the video but I like that SF Princeton Reverb in the background.
Check them out on Youtube when you get a chance and you'll see more of the same high quality songs. - JC

- Deconstructing Luther Perkins
Learning some Luther Perkins licks today for a gig. Luther was Johnny Cash's guitarist from 1955 to Luther's death in 1968. He's a good example of a musician who noticeably develops and advances over the course of his career. One Johnny Counterfit...
- John Scofield's New Orleans-gospel-jazz-rock-blues Thing.
Amongst my friends and students, I'm not known to be a great follower of newly recorded music. I find there to be so much to discover in old music that it keeps me busy enough. And there's something about the old ways of playing and singing that...
