David Bowie's lost 1973 Top of the Pops performance of The Jean Genie

guitarz.blogspot.com:

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the BBC had this ridiculous policy of wiping videotapes of programmes after broadcast - supposedly so as to save storage space and to enable tapes to re-used. In this exceedingly short-sighted move many classic TV programmes have been lost possibly forever (which is a particular bug bear of fans of the classic Sci Fi serial Doctor Who). How the BBC didn't ever envisage the onset of the domestic video market is completely beyond me. Anyway, the above clip of David Bowie performing "The Jean Genie" on Top of The Pops was one such clip believed to have been wiped and lost forever. Thankfully for us, John Henshall, the cameraman who shot the clip had a copy of the videotape in his personal collection. He had been unaware all these years that this particular performance was missing from the BBC's own archives. This clip was broadcast for the time since 1973 on last night's edition of TOTP2 on BBC2 here in the UK. (Read more here).

Note that the version of the song that appears here is quite different from either the single or album recordings, and features a great solo from the late great Mick Ronson on guitar.

- The Strawbs "shine On Silver Sun" And A Vox Winchester
guitarz.blogspot.com: Further to our previous post, here is a 1973 clip from BBC TV's Top Of The Pops featuring The Strawbs performing "Shine On Silver Sun" with guitarist Dave Lambert playing his Vox Winchester, which - as we have already seen -...

- Muse Perform "madness" With Doubleneck Bass / Misa Kitara
guitarz.blogspot.com: Whilst I confess that I'm not really a fan of Muse, I have to admit that they do use some very interesting instruments. Frontman Matt Bellamy is of course known for sometimes using a guitar with on-board Kaoss pad which he uses...

- What's Going On Here: Rickenbacker 4001 Bass With Competition Stripe?
guitarz.blogspot.com: You'll have to forgive me for exhibiting trainspotter-like tendencies and being a bit of a guitar nerd, but what's the deal with the Rickenbacker bass that Tony James of Generation X (Billy Idol's "punk lite" band from...

- Patrick Stewart Plays A Visually Heavily Modified Chapman Stick In Dune
guitarz.blogspot.com: OK, OK, so I said the Red Dwarf video clip would be the last of our look at guitars and guitar-like instruments in Science Fiction TV shows, but technically the above clip doesn't fall into quite the same category because it's...

- Mr Spock Jams On Vulcan Electric Harp Accompanied By Hippy Girl Playing A Bicycle Wheel
guitarz.blogspot.com: I guess this is the logical follow-up to the Space 1999 video clip we looked at the other day featuring the Coral Sitar. This clip comes from one of the Star Trek's more comic episodes, The Way To Eden, in which the Startship...
