This week marks my forty-somethingish birthday, twenty-three years since my first club gig and a dozen years since I went out on my first three month road trip. What a long, strange trip, indeed...
I got a good dose of humility as an early birthday gift on Sunday night when I had the unfortunate task of following Gretsch endorsee/pitchman Paul Pigat of the esteemed Cousin Harley at a local show. Paul came out loud and proud and holding nothing back, like a banshee wired with Les Paul and Paul Burlisons' brains in parallel. Sporting a lowly Squier Tele plugged into a nameless tweed deluxe clone, he deftly coaxed roaring, yet articulate rock'n'roll fury and Mickey Baker-esque weirdness, both, with poised nonchalance. This guy can play. Here's a video from another performance:
